Lawrence R. Kleinberg, M.D.

Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences

Associate Professor of Oncology

Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery

Subspecialty - Central Nervous System, Radiosurgery, Esophageal cancer

Dr. Kleinberg has an active program in the treatment of malignant and benign CNS diseases with external beam radiotherapy, brachtherapy, and radiosurgery (with Gamma Knife and with Brainlab system).

In addition, he treats esophageal cancer, primarily with combined modality protocols involving concurrent chemotherapy followed by surgical resection.

Dr. Kleinberg's research interests in the area of CNS tumors include (1) testing new agents in the therapy of Glioblastoma, (2)Improving fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery for acoustic neuroma, (3) Radiosurgery for multiple brain metastasis (4) Outcome with various techniques of radiosurgery (5) Quality of life issues.

In esophageal cancer, he participates in a research program with the goal of improving combined modality therapy. He is also the study chair for an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group trial comparing Taxol/Cisplatin/RT vs. CPT11/Cisplatin/RT. Correlative laboratory studies are evaluating the prevalence and predictive importance of hypermethylation of a panel of genes. They are also testing TNFerade, an adenovirus vector containing the gene for Tumor Necrosis Factor. When the ECOG trial is complete, a trial testing Iressa/Taxol/Cisplatin/radiation will open. There will be correlative studies testing the impact of Iressa on elements of the downstream signaling pathways that may impact upon radiosensitivity and tumor growth. Dr. Kleinberg also leads the esophageal interest group of the GI committee of ECOG.
