Advancing Care

Enhancing Healing

There are, occasionally, unique points in time when areas of science and medicine are advanced to such a degree that significant improvements in patient care can occur. These improvements can only occur if the best people and the best technology are combined in innovative ways at an institution of extraordinary capabilities. Today is that day and Johns Hopkins is that institution.

Recent advances in our understanding of radiation biology, molecular biology, and imaging are allowing us to see and study tumors like never before. We can now develop unique treatment strategies for patients in ways only dreamed of by previous generations of physicians, scientists and patients. The possibilities for increasing cancer cure while at the same time minimizing the side effects of treatment are exciting and invigorating to us.

The mission of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences is clear: accelerating research in and the delivery of novel cancer treatments that improve the lives of our patients. We have a program of extraordinary people and of high-end technology to provide clear leadership in the field and we are poised to advance the effectiveness of radiation delivery at this critical time in history.

Patient care, teaching and research are the three primary elements of the mission of the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. We believe that excellence in research is at the heart of fulfilling all aspects of the mission. Research excellence results in the most contemporary care for our patients and the most up to date training for our students. This is the basis of our department. Ultimately, on the shoulders of those who built Hopkins and in collaboration with our present day colleagues and supporters, we are advancing cancer care and enhancing the healing of patients in Baltimore and beyond.
