Summary:

This is a RTOG sponsored trial in which 122 patients were accessioned nationally. The trial closed to accrual on 03/01/2000. 12 patients were accessioned here at Johns Hopkins.
All nine patients who were treated on this protocol have expired due to cancer related illnesses (At the time of last year’s renewal there were three patients alive with disease however within the last year these three patients expired).
This trial did find that external irradiation plus concurrent weekly paclitaxel is well tolerated when given with large radiotherapy fields covering the primary cancer and surrounding lymphatics. A median survival of one year is better than historical results achieved with irradiation and fluoropyrimidines (5-FU). These data provide a basis for a new RTOG trial using paclitaxel and irradiation combined with a second radiation sensitizer, gemcitabine.
